Your 12 Step Guide to Starting a Small Business | Step 1

Now, there are tons of “how to start your small business” blog posts out there, but our take on this classic will give you some practical tips and tricks to jump start the process!

Step 1, Part 1: Realization & Acceptance (aka “Come to Jesus” moments)
Grab a note pad and a pen, and probably a tall cup of joe, because this is the toughest step! This is where things get really real and the dreamers get separated from the doers!

Why do you want to start a small business?  No, really. Why? What is it that is driving you to do this? Is it to make money, or have creative freedom, or maybe you just want to be your own boss? Hell, it could be something entirely different! Regardless of the “why”, being true to yourself and your desires are of utmost importance at this early stage.

Are you ready to take on the responsibility and accountability for yourself? If you are choosing to start a small business, the biggest obstacle you will face in this endeavor is yourself. From combating laziness to ditching the excuses, once you realize and accept that the only one thing that stands in the way of your success is you, you’re on your way to success!

Step 1, Part 2: Hashing It All Out (aka Get doodle happy!)
Once you realize your motivators and accept full responsibility for yourself, it’s time for a serious brainstorming session!

Here is where the paper comes in hand. You ready? Maybe grab some different color pens, sticky notes, and get brainstorm ready!

Now, ask yourself these questions and be as descriptive as you can be! Don’t ‘jip’ yourself because, let’s be real, it only hurts you.

  • What is it you want to do?
  • Will it be a service or a product?
  • Do you have any relatable skills?
  • Have you worked in that industry or is this a completely new venture for you?
  • Do you need start-up money?

This is just brainstorming; don’t let yourself get too deep in thought on business structures, pricing, tax filings, etc. We want your page to literally look like your brain just exploded onto the page.

Breakin it down, I LOVE it! So often we dive head first into “entrepreneurship” thinking its exactly what we want or need in our lives only to find it is exactly what we DONT want. Fill out the why, OWN IT! Make it REAL!
